Rotorua
Rotorua is on the route for almost every visitor to New Zealand's North Island. The Rotorua district is situated around a thriving city and a beautiful lake, with a population of approximately 68,000 people and around 35% of them are Maori. The city of Rotorua attracts around 3 million visitors each year, and at least half of them stay overnight.
Hard to miss, Rotorua's geo-thermal activity surrounds the city with a distinct sulphur smell. Its various attractions provide access to bubbling mud and gushing geysers amidst stunning lake and forest landscapes.
Thermal activity is at the heart of much of Rotorua's tourist appeal. Geysers and mud-pools, hot thermal springs and a village buried by a volcanic eruption are all located within easy reach of the city.
Rotorua is home to not only geothermal interests, but also very beautiful botanical gardens and some interesting historic architecture. The formal Government Gardens by the lakeshore at the eastern end of town are particularly worth a visit. The city also offers fine dining, fantastic accommodation, great action activities and excellent shopping. And Rotorua's medical and thermal spas are regarded among the best in the world.
