Lake Tarawera
Clearwater Cruises is based at the Tarawera Landing on the shores of Lake Tarawera. This is one of the most mesmerizing locations in the country, if not in the world. While cruising with us, you are assured of breathtaking views, surrounded by dense native bush and entertained by the sound of Tui, bellbird, wood pigeon (Kereru) and quail.
Lake Tarawera is the largest of a series of stunning lakes which surround the majestic mountain. The lake's surface area is 39 km, situated 18 km to the east of Rotorua, and five km to the west of the mountain.
Lake Tarawera is home to a range of eels and trout. With its sparkling clear waters fringed with deep green untouched bush, the lake provides the perfect setting for a range of activities. In summer it is a very popular spot for fishing, water sports, swimming and for just relaxing as there are a number of lovely hot water beaches to be found.
One of our favorite places at the Lake is Te Rata Bay. This beach is located in a secluded bay and is only accessible by boat. Thermal springs gently rise through the lake bed warming the water and creating mystical steam shrouded cliffs. You will surely enjoy a relaxing swim here or an intimate soak in a natural thermal rock pool accompanied by a chilled glass of champagne. This is pure bliss.
